The Problem: Damp, sweaty sports equipment that is worn often, stored in a
somewhat air tight bag and sometimes cleaned but very seldom sanitized or deodorized.
The Danger: Bacteria thrive in this dark, damp environment. These bacteria can be
dangerous when they contact an athlete’s skin. Many NHL, NFL, College, High School and
younger athletes have succumbed to bacterial infections contracted from their equipment.
The Culprit: Methicillin-Resistant Stapholococcus Aueras or MRSA. In short, MRSA is a
staph bacteria that resists treatment with antibiotics like penicillin, amoxicillin, oxacillin, and
others from the methicillin class. Click here for more info on MRSA.
The Solution: Canadian university researchers developed the Sani Sport equipment
sanitizing system. The system was designed to destroy bacteria and eliminate odor.
The Process: The patented process converts Oxygen into Ozone. The Ozone is
circulated throughout the equipment, killing up to 97% of the bacteria. A patented Ecomist
solution, containing natural Tea Tree Oil, is then fogged into the equipment to attack the
remaining bacteria. The final step is to seal the process with a scented bactericide creating a
protective shield on the equipment.
The Facts: This is not another fragrance or scented cover-up. It is a scientific,
biological process designed to eliminate bacteria and the resulting odors. The equipment has
a scent that is slightly medicinal, but not unpleasant. Equipment is ready for immediate use.
The process can extend the life of the equipment as well.
The NHL: The NHL has named Sani Sport the preferred supplier of sports equipment
sanitizing machinery. There are currently 22 NHL teams using the Sani Sport at their home
rink or training facility and the list is growing quickly.
USA Hockey: Sani Sport is the official equipment cleaning company of USA Hockey,
and, in 2005, USA Hockey also established Sani Sport as an official sponsor at the USA
Hockey National Team Development Program.
Beyond Hockey - the NFL: There are currently 8 NFL teams using the Sani
Sport at their home field or training facility and the list is growing.
Beyond Hockey - more sports: The Sani Sport system can be used to
clean a variety of other equipment such as Lacrosse pads and helmet, soccer shin guards,
baseball/softball mitts and catchers equipment, and of course cleats for any sport. If it fits in
the machine, we can clean it!

Comments from NHL and NFL Head Equipment Managers:
Referring to the Boston Bruins, and the fact that they have been victimized by serious STAPH infections a
number of times, Peter Henderson said: “We bought the machine specifically to try and prevent this type of injury
from happening. It’s been great since we got the Sani Sport in November, we have had no issues like we used to
have. It's the only machine that we use for all of our players”.
Rip Simonick of the Buffalo Sabres described the Sani Sport as the “main reason for a very significant reduction
in skin rashes, infections, etc”. He also noted that because the bacteria was eliminated and not eating away at
the equipment, the life span and performance of the equipment was greatly improved.
Doug Shearer of the Washington Capitals maintains that his “players love it and recognize the importance of
clean gear in terms of injury prevention”.
Peter Millar of the LA Kings states that “Bacteria thrives in moisture and heat and we might have been
accelerating that process. The Sani Sport has been an excellent addition to our dressing room. We want to be
pro active and cut the risk. It’s my job to make sure my players are as protected as possible”.
Red Batty, Head Equipment Manager of the Green Bay Packers says "I have found Sani Sport to be the most
effective way to prevent bacterial infections from harming my players. With the seriousness of MRSA
increasing everyday, Sani Sport helps me keep my players on the field and injury free."
Brad Melland, Head Equipment Manager of the Cleveland Browns states "Using the Sani Sport machine this
past year has allowed me to be proactive in the fight against MRSA. The machine is very user friendly and
allows me to treat equipment on a daily basis. I recommend the Sani Sport for everyone interested."
Testimonial from USA Hockey:
Dear USA Hockey Magazine:
We learned the hard way about the consequences of not cleaning your hockey equipment properly when our 15-
year-old son developed a serious STAPH infection in his shoulder that was caused by the bacteria in his shoulder
pads.
It took a while for the infection to show up, and by the time we were referred to an orthopedic specialist, the
infection had set in and my son was admitted to the hospital.
Luckily our son will make a full recovery and be able to play hockey again, but with clean equipment. The doctor
strongly recommended that we clean and sterilize equipment twice a season, and I will definitely follow that
recommendation. It’s a small price to pay considering all the time our son spent in the hospital and the anxiety we
experienced.
We are so thankful that our son will be OK and we don’t want to see anyone else go through what we did when it’
s easily preventable.
